As announced during the Anywhere School 2021 online event, Google Meet is getting new education-focused features. These features will enable moderators and admin to have more control over online sessions, including the video lock’ feature that will grant the host to turn off everyone’s video at once.
Latest Google Meet updates
Along with bringing in a few improvements, Google Meet video calls will also support public live streaming to YouTube, hand-raising improvements, multiple hosts support and live translated captions in the coming few months. The improved hand-raise feature will generate a notification informing the teacher about the same. These users will show up in a grid and the notification will show how many people raised their hands and in what order. And once a student with a raised hand is done talking, their hand will automatically come down. It will also allow subscribers to conduct public livestreams right on to YouTube so anyone outside of the institution can attend to offer free access to anyone and everyone. This will prove beneficial especially for school board meetings, school events, and more. The tech giant is also planning to roll live translated captions later this year. When this feature will be enabled, it will allow users to clearly listen to someone speaking one language and see real-time captions in another language. Google Meet users will also get the ability to pin tiles in the coming months, to keep a few people front and centre throughout. Multiple hosts support will be rolling out in the next months as well, enabling users to partner with other people to manage a session.
Google Classroom updates
Google is also revamping Google Classroom with several interesting features. For instance, every teacher and co-teacher in a Classroom class will be meeting hosts in Meet by default. This will allow teachers to share the load of managing online classes in such difficult times. Also, once the teacher is available, students named in the Classroom roster will be inevitably admitted to the meeting from the ‘waiting room’. Till then, they won’t be able to see or communicate with other participants until a teacher is present.
